DirectionModeRoutePoint / originProductsSource
crude in pipeline Mobil Pipe Line Mokena-to-Joliet crude pipeline
Final leg into the refinery. A 2014 open season notice for the JBBR Pipeline names Mobil Pipe Line Company's Mokena-to-Joliet crude pipeline as the line giving shippers direct access to the Joliet refinery. ExxonMobil's 2026 fact sheet lists a terminal or tank farm at Mokena among its area facilities.
Mokena, Illinois crude source
crude in pipeline Enbridge Mainline (Lakehead System)
Enbridge's February 2021 index of Lakehead tariffs lists Mokena, Illinois as a crude petroleum destination. Crude delivered at Mokena reaches the refinery over the Mobil Pipe Line Mokena-to-Joliet line. ExxonMobil says the plant is located to receive and process Canadian crude oil delivered by pipeline; no Enbridge tariff names the refinery itself.

crude in rail Joliet Bulk, Barge & Rail (JBBR) crude-by-rail terminal and JBBR Pipeline
Crude is unloaded from rail at the JBBR terminal and moves on the JBBR Pipeline to the Mobil Pipe Line Mokena-to-Joliet crude line. A 2014 notice described the terminal as built, owned and operated by Joliet Bulk, Barge & Rail LLC; Argus reported in 2015 that the site is owned by CenterPoint Properties and serves only ExxonMobil. Sources date from 2014 and 2015.

products out pipeline Wolverine Pipeline
Two Wolverine lines leave the plant: a 22-mile, 16-inch line to Lockport, Illinois (1972), where Wolverine lists an ExxonMobil terminal, and a 49-mile, 18-inch line to Hammond, Indiana (1976). Wolverine's FERC tariff 170.15.0, effective 2026-07-01, files rates from Joliet to Lemont-Lockport and to Hammond, with volume incentive rates for RBOB and on-road ultra low sulfur diesel from Joliet to Hammond. Wolverine's own pages name the Joliet origin as the ExxonMobil Refinery.

products out truck rack ExxonMobil Joliet refinery truck rack
ExxonMobil's 2026 fact sheet says asphalt and petroleum coke leave by truck, barge and rail to Illinois, Indiana and Missouri. The same fact sheet says gasoline and diesel leave by pipeline. A gasoline and diesel truck rack at the plant is not confirmed by any source.

products out barge Joliet refinery barge loading dock
ExxonMobil's 2026 fact sheet lists a barge loading dock and says asphalt and petroleum coke move by barge. In September 2017 ExxonMobil Oil Corporation asked Illinois EPA for a provisional variance to load gasoline onto barges at the refinery.

Events

Outages, fires, turnarounds, sales and closures — newest first.
  1. 2026-09-13 outage

Severe weather knocked out power (ComEd lines damaged) and floodwater overwhelmed a pump, forcing an emergency shutdown; refinery remained offline through at least 2026-09-17-18 amid record/near-record Midwest diesel prices. source

  2. 2025-05-20 outage

Operational issue left most units offline; refinery ramped a key unit back to full capacity by late May 2025. source

  3. 2024-07-15 outage

Emergency shutdown after severe weather damaged ComEd primary/secondary power lines; refinery offline roughly three weeks; EPA issued an emergency fuel-supply waiver in response to the Midwest gasoline impact. source

Rates are pipeline line-haul transcribed from published FERC tariffs; every figure cites its tariff and item. Cost to serve (netback) adds origin spot price and destination fees. "Confirmed" links match a tariff delivery point to the facility; "same city" means the point is in the facility's city — plausible, not proof; "per research" means the facility's research profile names the pipeline as an outlet.
